Description

Delightfully festive Santa Hat Cupcakes featuring rich devil’s food chocolate cupcakes topped with creamy homemade cream cheese frosting dyed red and decorated to resemble Santa hats, perfect for holiday celebrations and parties.

Ingredients

Scale

Cupcakes

  • 1 box Devil’s food cake mix

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 2 8 oz packages cream cheese, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring
  • Red sanding sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Cupcakes: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Prepare the devil’s food chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions. Pour the batter evenly into the liners and bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centers comes out clean. Once baked, remove from oven and allow cupcakes to cool completely.
  2. Make Cream Cheese Frosting: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is light and fluffy, ensuring there are no lumps and the frosting has a smooth consistency.
  3. Divide and Color Frosting: Transfer about one-third of the cream cheese frosting into a smaller bowl to remain white. Add red food coloring to the remaining frosting in the large bowl and mix thoroughly until a vibrant red color is achieved.
  4. Decorate Cupcakes: Using a piping bag fitted with a large tip, pipe the red frosting onto each cupcake in a conical shape that resembles a Santa hat. Sprinkle red sanding sugar over the red frosting for a sparkling effect. Then, with a smaller star tip, pipe the white frosting around the base edge and add a white dot on top to mimic the fluffy trims and pom-pom of Santa’s hat.

Notes

  • Ensure cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting and sliding of the frosting.
  • You can adjust the red food coloring to get the desired shade for the Santa hats.
  • Use a piping bag with different tips to achieve cleaner and more festive decorations.
  • Refrigerate cupcakes if not serving immediately to keep frosting firm and fresh.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute cream cheese and butter with appropriate vegan alternatives.
