Description

This Chicken Cheesesteaks recipe offers a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak by using tender, thinly sliced chicken breasts sautéed with sautéed onions and bell peppers, seasoned perfectly, and topped with melted provolone cheese inside soft hoagie rolls. It’s a quick and satisfying sandwich perfect for a flavorful weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 bell peppers (red and green), chopped
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp. Italian seasoning

Cheese and Bread

  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the chopped onion and bell peppers, seasoning them with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are very soft, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken breasts and Italian seasoning to the skillet with the vegetables. Stir to combine everything evenly. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the chicken turns golden and is no longer pink inside, which should take about 10 minutes.
  3. Melt the Cheese: Once the chicken and peppers are cooked, lay the slices of provolone cheese over the mixture. Cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt, which should take about 1 minute.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Open each hoagie roll and fill them generously with the cheesy chicken and peppers mixture. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce while cooking the chicken.
  • If preferred, substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or American cheese.
  • To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free hoagie rolls or buns.
  • Ensure chicken slices are thin for even cooking and tender texture.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in a skillet or microwave but are best fresh.
