Description

Classic Pigs in a Blanket made with flaky pastry dough wrapped around juicy hot dogs and melted cheddar cheese, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or party food, these bite-sized treats are crispy on the outside with a savory and cheesy center.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry and Filling

  • 1 (250 gram) sheet pastry dough (homemade or store-bought), thawed
  • 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 6 hot dogs

For Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for baking the pigs in a blanket evenly.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Divide the pastry dough sheet evenly into 6 pieces, approximately 3 by 6 inches each. If using homemade pie dough, roll it into a 10 by 12-inch rectangle and slice it into 6 even pieces.
  3. Add Cheese and Hot Dogs: Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over each piece of dough. Then, place one hot dog on top of the cheese on each dough piece.
  4. Roll and Seal: Carefully roll up the dough tightly around each hot dog into a log shape and pinch the edges to seal the dough, preventing the cheese from leaking out during baking.
  5. Slice Rolls: Using a knife or bench scraper, cut each rolled log into 3 equal pieces, each about 2 inches long, making a total of 18 individual pigs in a blanket.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops of each roll with the beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden finish.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and flaky.
  8. Serve Immediately: Remove from the oven and serve warm with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Storage: Let leftover pigs in a blanket cool to room temperature, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a 400°F oven for 15 minutes or air fry for 5-10 minutes until warmed through.
  • Freezing: Can be frozen before or after baking. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months.
  • Cooking Frozen: Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before cooking or reheat. To bake from frozen, add 20-25 minutes to the cooking time.
