Description
This Cast Iron Skillet Pizza recipe features a crispy, golden crust made from frozen bread dough, topped with marinara sauce, melted mozzarella, pepperoni slices, and parmesan cheese, finished with fresh basil. Using a preheated cast-iron skillet in a hot oven creates a deliciously crispy base similar to traditional pizza ovens, perfect for homemade pizza lovers looking for an easy yet flavorful meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Pizza Dough
- 1 loaf Frozen Bread Dough
- 1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
Toppings
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup pepperoni slices
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil, for topping
Instructions
- Thaw Dough: Let Rhodes dough thaw according to package directions, preferably overnight in the fridge. Prepare all toppings ahead of time by slicing any vegetables, olives, and grating cheese.
- Preheat Oven and Skillet: Place the cast iron skillet in the oven and preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C). Leave the skillet in the oven for about 20 minutes to get really hot. Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven and drizzle the bottom with olive oil, spreading it evenly with a paper towel or brush. Be cautious as the pan will be extremely hot.
- Prepare Dough in Skillet: Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a size a couple of inches larger than the skillet diameter using a rolling pin or your fingers. Transfer the dough carefully into the greased skillet, pressing it up the sides. If using multiple toppings, poke holes in the dough with a fork and bake the crust for 7 minutes before adding toppings; if using three or fewer toppings, proceed directly.
- Add Sauce: Spread marinara sauce evenly over the pizza dough. Optionally, sprinkle Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or other herbs at this stage for additional flavor.
- Add Cheese: Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
- Add Toppings: Arrange pepperoni slices or your preferred toppings evenly over the cheese. Sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on top.
- Bake Pizza: Place the skillet back in the oven and bake for 14-17 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from oven and let the pizza sit for a minute.
- Serve: Use a pancake turner to carefully lift the pizza out of the skillet onto a cutting board. Top with fresh basil leaves, slice, and serve warm.
Notes
- This recipe yields two 9-inch pizzas from one loaf of frozen dough.
- You may cut the dough in half to make one pizza and use the other half to bake bread.
- If thawing Rhodes frozen rolls instead of dough, adjust handling accordingly.
- Be extremely careful when handling the preheated cast iron skillet as it retains very high heat.
- Use a fork to poke holes in the dough before baking if adding lots of toppings to prevent sogginess.
